Before you head out on your next vacation it is important to make sure that you secure your home. It is absolutely necessary to take the time to properly secure and organize your home before you leave so that you will have peace of mind and help prevent any potential issues while you're away. Regardless of where you are going, where you are going to explore a bustling city for a weekend, lounging on a beach for a week in an exotic Caribbean Island or taking a month long extended cruise vacation, listed below are essential tips to consider before you leave. 1. Secure Doors and Windows Before leaving for your vacation, double-check that all doors and windows are securely locked. Invest in sturdy locks for added security and consider installing a home security system or surveillance cameras for extra peace of mind. Ensuring that your home is properly sealed can deter potential intruders and protect your belongings while you're away. 2. Arrange for Mail and Deliveries A pile of newspapers or packages accumulating on your doorstep can signal to burglars that no one is home. Arrange for a neighbor or trusted friend to collect your mail, newspapers, and any packages while you're away. Alternatively, you can request a hold on mail delivery from your local post office until you return. 3. Set Timers for Lights Keep your home looking lived-in by setting timers for lights or investing in smart light bulbs that can be controlled remotely. This simple trick can create the illusion that someone is home, deterring potential intruders. Additionally, consider setting timers for a radio or television to add to the effect. 4. Adjust Thermostat and Appliances Save energy and prevent any mishaps by adjusting your thermostat before you leave. In the winter, set the temperature to a lower but safe level to prevent pipes from freezing and bursting, and in the summer, set it higher to conserve energy. Unplug non-essential appliances to avoid any potential fire hazards and reduce energy consumption while you're away. 5. Secure Valuables Safeguard your valuables by storing them in a secure location or safe within your home. Consider locking away important documents, jewelry, and electronics to protect them from theft or damage. Additionally, take inventory of your belongings and consider documenting them with photographs or a written list for insurance purposes. Or you can always place your valuables in a safe deposit box. 6. Notify Family or Friends of Your Travels Inform a trusted neighbor, friend, or family member about your travel plans and provide them with your contact information in case of emergencies. Leave them with a spare key and ask them to keep an eye on your property while you're away. Having someone readily available to check on your home can offer added security and peace of mind. 7. Clean and Organize It’s a wonderful feeling to return home to a welcoming and tidy home by taking the time to clean and organize your home before you leave. Dispose of any perishable items in the refrigerator, take out the trash, and give your home a thorough cleaning to prevent unpleasant odors or pests. Clear countertops and surfaces to deter clutter and make it easier to spot any irregularities upon your return. 8. Consider Pet Care If you have pets, make arrangements for their care while you're away. Whether you hire a pet sitter, enlist the help of a friend, or board them at a reputable facility, make sure that your pets are well-cared for when you are away. Remember to leave clear instructions and supplies to make sure your pets are comfortable and safe. Final Thoughts By taking the time to prepare your home before you go on vacation, you can enjoy your travels with greater peace of mind knowing that your property is secure and well-maintained. These simple yet essential steps can help minimize any potential risks and ensure a smooth and worry-free vacation experience. Imagine her laughter echoing through the halls and her spirit dancing in the gardens. Sarlat – a Medieval Town In the medieval streets of Sarlat, wander through the impeccably preserved cobblestone streets where Josephine Baker once shopped for fresh strawberries and local crafts. As you walk through the town, let your imagination wander through centuries of history. On Saturday you will have a treat when you visit the Saturday market in Sarlat. Stress Free Flying
By Cynthia Amin 21 Jan, 2024
Flying can be an exhilarating experience, opening up a world of possibilities and adventures. However, the process of flying can sometimes be stressful. As an experienced travel advisor, I understand the importance of ensuring a smooth journey for my clients. In this blog, I'll share fifteen (15) valuable travel tips and tricks on how to help take the stress out of flying and make your next trip more enjoyable. Plan and Pack Smartly: Start by planning your trip well in advance. Create a checklist of essential items, documents, and travel essentials. Make sure to pack efficiently, considering the weather at your destination and any specific requirements. If possible, pack a carry-on bag to avoid the hassle of checking luggage and save time at the airport. Arrive Early: To reduce anxiety, arrive at the airport well before your flight's departure time. This allows ample time for check-in, security checks, and unexpected delays. Many airports offer online check-in services, making the process smoother and faster. Choose the Right Seat: Selecting the right seat can significantly impact your in-flight experience. If you prefer more legroom, consider choosing an exit row or upgrading to premium seating. You can also purchase an extra legroom seat. Use online tools or consult your travel advisor to pick the seat that suits your needs and preferences. Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Flying can be dehydrating, so it's essential to stay hydrated throughout your journey. Bring an empty reusable water bottle to fill up after passing through security. Additionally, pack healthy snacks to keep your energy levels up and avoid relying solely on in-flight meals. Dress Comfortably: Wearing comfortable clothing can make a significant difference during a long flight. Choose loose-fitting, breathable clothes and bring an extra layer in case the cabin temperature fluctuates. Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes because your feet may swell during the flight. Entertainment Essentials: To make your time in the air more enjoyable, pack things for entertainment like books, music, or movies. Many airlines provide in-flight entertainment, but having your preferred entertainment options ensures a more personalized and stress-free experience. Also bring a good pair of noise-canceling headphones. Combat Jet Lag: It can be challenging adjusting to a new time zone, but there are ways to minimize the impact of jet lag. Stay hydrated, regulate your sleep schedule before departure, and expose yourself to natural light upon arrival. These practices can help your body adapt more quickly to the new time zone. When you arrive at your destination start your day as planned, do not go to bed. Request assistance if you have mobility issues: If you need assistance at the airport, make a reservation with the airline as soon as possible. If you're not able to walk long distances, make sure that you request wheelchair assistance or guided assistance reservations when you are booking your ticket or make sure you tell your travel advisor to add that service to your ticket. Don’t pack wrapped gifts: If you are traveling during the holiday season, do not wrap your gifts. If something inside the package triggers a red flag during the security screen, an officer will have to unwrap the gift wasting your effort and ruining your pretty package. I suggest that you pack the giftwrap and wrap your gifts at your destination or ship your gifts in advance. Download the airline app: Download the app at home before you go to the airport. Set up your account and login and sign up for text alerts and notifications. If there is a date change or schedule change you will be notified via app. You can also track your luggage through the app. Most of the airline apps have a chat feature where you can chat with a live agent if you need assistance during your travel. Plan your airport transportation: If you don’t have friends or family picking you up when you arrive at your destination, plan for a transfer pre- and post-departure. This can be a taxi or airport transfer service. Keep in mind that rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft will surge in price and are super busy during the holiday or busy seasons. Planning your airport transfer in advance will save a lot of time, hassle, and stress. They can also assist with your luggage. For a little extra money, you can make your arrival and departure much easier. Reserve your airport parking: If you cannot get a ride to the airport and have to drive, it is better to book your parking spot in advance. Parking lots at airports are very crowded and can get very full, especially during holidays. If you can reserve your parking spot in advance, that can save you time and money. Use valet baggage service: Even if you arrive at the airport early and have all your documents in order, you may still have to wait in a long line to drop off your bags. You may be able to skip the long line by using a valet luggage service outside the drop off area. Make sure you bring some cash because tipping is customary for this service. Plan ahead for your connections: Certain airports are larger than others, harder to navigate and may even require a tram to get to your next gate. The Miami-Dade airport in Miami and the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta are perfect examples. When you're booking your flight, check the connecting airport and allow ample time to make your connection. If you have the airline app on your phone, you can look at the terminal map for where you're connecting. The app can provide directions to the gate and estimate the time it takes to get there. Plus, you can check out food options and look for restrooms. Try to aim for an hour or more between connecting flights. 30 minutes is never enough time to make a connection. Build in a buffer day: If you're planning to take a cruise don’t arrive at your departure destination the day you plan to sail. It’s very risky to have your arrival day be on the day of the cruise departure, family reunion or big event that you don’t want to miss. Give yourself an extra day or two so if your flight is canceled or delayed, you have a buffer to get where you need to be on time and in good spirits. Final Thoughts: By incorporating these travel tips into your flying routine, you can transform your air travel experience from stressful to enjoyable. As a travel advisor, I always prioritize the well-being and comfort of my clients, ensuring that their journeys are as seamless as possible. Remember, a stress-free fl ight sets the tone for a fantastic travel adventure! a sunset with a tornado in the distance
By Cynthia Amin 28 Nov, 2023
Traveling to explore a new destination is an exciting adventure filled with the excitement, adventure, and the promise of unforgettable experiences. However, experienced travelers know that travel is not always smooth. While travel is generally a rewarding and enriching experience, it's important to be aware of potential challenges that can arise. Here are some other unfortunate situations that you may encounter along the way as well as some suggestions on how to navigate the unpredictable and avoid common pitfalls. Learn to be Flexible One of the first lessons many travelers learn is the importance of flexibility. Plans can change suddenly due to weather, technical issues, cancellations or unforeseen circumstances which can impact your trip. What happens if the train does not arrive on time, or your flight gets cancelled, or you miss your ferry back to the mainland? Sidenote – this happened to me. Instead of panicking, embrace the situation, explore the local culture, and make connections with fellow travelers. My advice, be calm and flexible. Sometimes the best experiences emerge from unexpected challenges. Pack Smart, Pack Light We all have the tendency to overpack and I am sure you have fallen victim to it at least once. If you are on a multi-city trip or are riding the trains through Europe, it will seem like your suitcase gets heavier every day. My advice is to make sure you have a good suitcase which rolls well, only pack the essentials, travel with versatile clothing, and leave room for souvenirs. Research and Learn About the Destination Before traveling to a new destination, it always good to know something about the local customs so that you do not inadvertently offend anyone Along with you travel advisor, take the time to understand the cultural nuances, traditions, and etiquette of the places you visit. It not only enhances your experience but also shows respect for the locals. Prioritize Your Health Make sure you prioritize your health because nothing derails a trip faster than getting sick. Remember to wash your hands frequently, stay hydrated, be aware of food-related illnesses, altitude sickness and exposure to new diseases. Before departure remember to check if any vaccines are required for your travel. Secure Your Belongings Unfortunately, petty theft is an unpleasant reality in many tourist areas. A stolen wallet, purse or cell phone during a city tour can derail your trip. Remember to be vigilant and invest in anti-theft accessories. If you carry a knapsack, make sure you keep it zippered and keep your belongings safe. Keep your personal belongings secure, use money belts, make copies of your passport, purchase insurance and be cautious in crowded areas. Think About a Backup Plan Despite meticulous planning, unforeseen circumstances can derail your plans. A canceled flight, unexpected closure of a tourist site or bad weather can be devasting. Always have a backup plan, be it another route, planned activity for the day, or destination. Keep in mind that flexibility and adaptability go hand in hand. Keep Abreast of Natural Disasters and Weather You may experience extreme weather conditions, such as storms, heatwaves, or unexpected cold snaps which can impact your outdoor activities as well as your overall travel plans. Earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, or other natural disasters can occur, especially in regions prone to such events. All these things can disrupt your travel plans, pose safety risks, and affect your t ravel plans and safety. This is why you should always have a backup plan. Learn the Importance of Communication Visiting a country where you do not know the language or customs can be challenging. Why not take the time before your trip to learn a few essential phrases in the local language? You can also download a translation app. Having an app will make your communicating on your trip and will foster better connections with the local people Lack of awareness or misinterpretation of local customs, traditions, or etiquette may lead to uncomfortable situations or even offense. Keep Up to Date on Political and Civil Unrest If you travel to areas experiencing political instability or civil unrest this can pose a risk to personal safety and disrupt your travel plans. Unexpected unrest can also arise unexpectedly. Recently they had protests in Paris which disrupted many travel plans. Beware of Scams and Fraud During your travel you may encounter scams, fraudulent activities. You may be overcharged at certain destinations which may impact you both financially and emotionally. Check Your Accommodation You may experience problems with your accommodation, such as noisy neighbors, cleanliness concerns, or unexpected room changes. All these things can affect the overall travel experience. Final Thoughts While travel mishaps may seem overwhelming at the moment, they often become the stories that make your vacation truly memorable. My advice: Embrace the unexpected, learn from each experience, and carry those lessons forward into your future travels. After all, it's not just about the destination; it's about the journey – mishaps and all. As a travel advisor, it's essential to understand the distinctions that distinguish tourism from travel. While these terms are often used interchangeably, they have distinct differences in both focus and purpose. Recognizing these distinctions can help Colesville Travel better cater to their clients' needs and preferences. By being aware of these differences and taking these differences into account when planning itineraries, Colesville Travel can ultimately enhance the client travel experience. In this blog, we will explore the differences between tourism and travel, and explain why these two concepts are not quite the same. Tourism: A Structured Experience Tourism primarily refers to the industry that revolves around organized and structured travel experiences. It involves people visiting destinations, attractions, and accommodations that are carefully designed to cater to tourists. The emphasis is on providing convenience, comfort, and well-planned itineraries to maximize enjoyment. Purpose and Focus: The main purpose of tourism is to provide visitors with an enjoyable and memorable experience. Tourists often seek well-established destinations, guided tours, and structured activities that ensure they make the most of their trip. Itineraries: Tourism frequently includes pre-planned itineraries with set schedules and activities. Travelers may opt for tours that cover popular landmarks, historical sites, and cultural experiences. Amenities: Tourists expect a high level of comfort and convenience, with access to various amenities, such as hotels, restaurants, and transportation services. Predictability: Tourism tends to be predictable, as visitors have a clear idea of what to expect, reducing the element of surprise or spontaneity. Travel: A Personal Exploration On the other hand, travel is a broader concept that encompasses a more personal and exploratory approach to travel. Travelers often seek to immerse themselves in the local culture and surroundings, experiencing a destination in a way that aligns with their individual interests and preferences. Purpose and Focus: The primary focus of travel is to explore and discover new places, cultures, and experiences. Travelers often prioritize authenticity and personal growth. Freedom and Flexibility: Travelers value the freedom to choose their path, make impromptu decisions, and explore off-the-beaten-path destinations. This can lead to unique and unconventional experiences. Accommodation: While many travelers do opt to stay in 4-star hotels and have all the conveniences, some travelers prefer a variety of accommodation options, ranging from hostels and guesthouses to camping and homestays, depending on their preferences and budget. Local Engagement: Travel encourages interaction with local people, trying local cuisine, and immersing in the local way of life. It often leads to more profound cultural exchanges. The following are examples of tours for travelers who seek authentic and immersive experiences and want to connect with local culture and traditions: Culinary Tours: Food is a gateway to culture. Culinary tours offer travelers the opportunity to explore local markets, sample regional dishes, and even take cooking classes to learn the art of preparing authentic dishes. Walking Tours: Guided walking tours through historical neighborhoods or natural landscapes allow travelers to soak in the surroundings at a leisurely pace. Local guides often provide insights into the history, architecture, and share local stories that bring a place to life. Cultural Festivals and Events: Attending local festivals, religious celebrations, or cultural events allows travelers to witness traditions, music, dance, and rituals that are deeply ingrained in the local culture. Volunteer and Service Tours: Engaging in volunteer work while traveling provides an immersive experience, allowing travelers to make a positive impact on the local community. Language and Cultural Exchange Programs: Learning the local language and engaging in cultural exchange programs can deepen a traveler's connection with a destination. This opens doors to genuine interactions with local people. Taking a vacation and focusing on your health can offer numerous benefits for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Modern life can be incredibly stressful, and chronic stress can lead to a host of health problems. A health-focused vacation provides an opportunity to escape the daily grind, unwind, and reset. Taking part in relaxing activities, serene environments, and mindful practices can help your well-being. In a world filled with hustle and bustle, stress, and daily responsibilities, it's crucial to pause and prioritize your well-being. What better way to achieve this than by focusing on health and wellness while on vacation? In this blog, we'll explore ten (10) reasons why you should embrace a wellness-focused approach to travel and how it can lead to a healthier lifestyle in the long run. 1. Physical Rejuvenation One of the most obvious benefits of wellness travel is the opportunity to give your body a well-deserved break. Stress and daily routines can take a toll on your physical health. By choosing destinations and activities that promote physical wellness, such as yoga retreats, hiking adventures, or spa getaways, you can recharge and revitalize your body. 2. Mental Clarity A vacation focused on wellness can be a mental reset button. Disconnecting from the demands of everyday life and immersing yourself in tranquil surroundings allows for mental clarity and relaxation. Activities like meditation, mindfulness, and deep relaxation techniques can help you find balance and reduce stress. 3. Nutrition and Healthy Eating Traveling provides an opportunity to explore new cuisines and flavors. Embracing local, fresh, and nutritious foods not only pleases your palate but also supports your health. Many wellness destinations offer farm-to-table dining experiences, cooking classes, and nutrition-focused programs to help you make healthier food choices even after your vacation ends. 4. Active Adventures Wellness travel often involves active adventures that encourage physical activity and exploration. From cycling tours in scenic landscapes, stand-up paddleboarding in crystal-clear waters, kayaking to skiing in the alps, these activities not only keep you fit but also introduce you to new hobbies you can continue at home. 5. Stress Reduction Chronic stress can lead to numerous health issues. Wellness vacations offer a chance to de-stress through activities like spa treatments, nature walks, or simply unwinding by the beach. Learning stress management techniques during your travels can positively impact your life long after you return home. 6. Mind-Body Connection Wellness travel often includes mind-body practices like yoga, Tai Chi, and meditation. These practices help you connect with your inner self, fostering a sense of inner peace and self-awareness that can enhance your overall well-being. 7. Inspiration for a Healthier Lifestyle Perhaps the most significant benefit of wellness-focused vacations is the inspiration they provide for adopting a healthier lifestyle. The positive experiences and habits you cultivate during your travels can easily be integrated into your daily routine back home. This can lead to long-lasting improvements in your health and well-being. 8. Bonding and Relationships If you travel with loved ones, a health-focused vacation can be an excellent opportunity to bond and strengthen your relationships. Engaging in wellness activities together can create lasting memories and improve your connections. 9. Connection with Nature Many wellness destinations are located in natural settings, such as mountains, forests, or by the sea. Connecting with nature has been shown to reduce stress, boost mood, and improve overall well-being. 10. Emotional Well-Being Health-focused vacations offer a nurturing environment for emotional healing and self-reflection. Whether you're dealing with personal challenges or simply seeking a break from the daily grind, such vacations can provide the space and support to address emotional well-being. Final Thoughts As a travel advisor, we encourage our clients to prioritize health and wellness on their vacations. It's not just about relaxation; it's about making positive, lasting changes in your life. Wellness travel offers the perfect opportunity to rejuvenate your body, clear your mind, and gain the inspiration needed to lead a healthier lifestyle. So, the next time you plan a getaway, consider focusing on well-being and health – it's an investment in yourself that pays dividends long after your vacation ends.
