How to Cure Wanderlust at Home

Cynthia Amin • November 8, 2020

Because of Covid-19 we have become victims of self-isolation and social distancing. This unfortunately has become the norm and we may feel that we will not be traveling anywhere soon.  Although we may be isolated, we can still satisfy our wanderlust. For those of you who are true adventurers, I am sure you will enjoy my six (6) tips on how to keep your wanderlust alive while at home during these trying times.

So, if you have wanderlust and you are a true adventurer, you may be thinking of ways to stay inspired. Listed below are ways to keep your wanderlust alive and stay inspired while you plan for your next vacation.

Organizing your memories, watching movies, and reconnecting with old friends, these are all simple activities that are not only fun, but will make you smile. Let’s begin!

1) Armchair Travel

Are you familiar with armchair travel? Armchair travel is anything that takes you to distant places from the comfort of your home. It could be a good travel book, a travel movie, travel documentary, a virtual tour, a YouTube video, looking at travel photos, or souvenirs that you purchased while out of the country.

With Netflix, Amazon Prime, cable TV, movies, and books, it has never been easier to travel from the comfort of your home. With the onset of recent global restrictions, armchair travel has exploded. Armchair travel is nothing new, people have always enjoyed seeing documentaries about far-away cultures and reading books about round the world journeys.

We have also enjoyed movies like Eat, Pray, Love and Under the Tuscan Sun to satisfy our wanderlust and inspire us to see the world. No matter what kind of travel content you enjoy consuming, these suggestions can certainly lift your spirits until you can travel safely again.

2) Cook Your Way Around the World

Food is one of the most intimate, sensory ways to experience a destination. Beyond the people you meet and the places you visit while you travel, experienced travelers always tend to remember the tastes and smells of their favorite foods while travelling to their favorite countries. With so much time on our hands, now is a great time to bring exotic dishes from afar into our homes.
Memories of browsing a menu or strolling down a street full of market stalls can be endlessly revealing, shedding light on a city's history or a family's legacy. While there's certainly something to be said for eating food in its place of origin, one of the wonderful things about cooking is that anyone can try new dishes for themselves, no matter where your kitchen is located. There are dozens of cookbooks and kitchen essentials that will bring culinary traditions from around the globe into your home.

3) Organize Your Travel Memories

Our lives are so busy we rarely get a chance to sit back and reminisce about our favorite travel memories. Even though we cannot make travel memories right now, we can sift through our old photos, watch videos, scroll through our phone, and cherish the memories that we have made.
Why not print out your pictures and create a scrapbook of your past adventures? Consider writing a blog about your past adventures and share your travel experiences with others. Another suggestion is to frame some of your favorite photos and strategically place them around your home.
Now is the perfect time to transport yourself back in time and reminisce about your old, cherished memories.

4) Connect with Old Friends from Your Travels

Have you met friends during your travels? When was the last time you connected with them? We all know how difficult it is to find the time to catch up with friends that live in our state, never mind trying to catch up with those that we have met while traveling. Time differences, busy jobs and hectic social lives often keep us apart. We can credit Covid-19 for forcing most of our social interactions to be moved online. This creates the perfect opportunity to get in touch with our long-lost friends. Now is the perfect time to reconnect and strengthen our current and past friendships.

5) Learn a New language

Since you have more time to prepare for your next trip, why not go the extra mile and learn a new language? You may want to learn a new language for the fun of it, to exercise your brain or simply just to keep busy. Thanks to technology, learning a new language can easily be done at home and is very inexpensive. Duolingo, Rosetta Stone and Babbel are among the most popular apps and programs that can assist you in learning a new language.

6) Trip Planning is not Cancelled

I have been saying this for months! Take this time to plan your next vacation. Now is the perfect time to revisit your bucket-list and start thinking about where you want to travel next. If Covid-19 has taught us anything, it is that we can never take the opportunity to travel for granted again.
So, spin your globe, take out your world map, read your travel guide and start doing your research. If you need inspiration, contact Colesville Travel to talk about your options. I am sure the thousands of local communities around the world who rely on tourism, will be thankful.
